If you don't need to do any fancy editing to your Xacti footage and all you want to do is to get it onto a DVD disk, the simplest solution, if you have a set-top DVD recorder, is to simply connect the phono lead which comes with the Xacti to the set-top DVD recorder's phono inputs and press record. Instant. No fiddling around with PCs, software, codecs or file conversion.
If you need to edit the footage and have a DV camcorder with analog input, connect the Xacti's phono lead to the DV camcoder's analog input and transfer the Xacti's footage to DV tape. From there, you can capture it as a standard AVI file straight into Premiere, Studio or any other video editing software to edit and then export back to DV tape or burn to DVD.

Re reading this post from the beginning I didn't realise the PHOTO software is the one with the converter in it , that'll teach me to read things properly.... After trying it and noting what you said about the poor quality audio I noticed an Advanced button where you can raise the quality of the sound back to where it should be, cos the default is really low (Why you would want to create an AVI with so highly compressed sound I don't know). So hurrah, I can now create AVI files that are compatable with probably any Video Editing SW (especially Pinnacle Studio V9 I have, I'll try it later....). The only drawback is the AVI files are big, good job huge HD's are so cheap now.....

Just to reiterate The most important find we have had as a website is this application:- mp4cam2avi.sourceforge.net/Which 'converts' the Xacti MP4 footage into a useable AVI without increasing the file size much and doesnt affect the audio. The AVI file created by this tiny application is very good quality and is the recommended action (from most ppl on this forum) into getting the MP4 files editable in ALL video editing applications. SO hopefully RMJ - you will try and use this method to reduce the AVI file size on your hardrive? Lee www.xacti.co.uk

Thats why I'm so excited, the MPcam2avi and all the others I have tried (and I've tried lots) didn't work with Pinnacle Studio, the Ulead sw turns them into true AVI files that I can do what I like with and I didn't have to get my wallet out....

Well done! After converting with MP4cam2avi I have had no problem with ALL video editing software - I am sure I tried it with Pinnacle aswell and it did accept the files! Ill try again and report back! Lee www.xacti.co.uk

for all having problems with mp4cam2avi and editing software: (black prevoew in Premiere etc.): 1. Uninslatt ALL MPEG-4 codecs from your system (XviD, ffdshow, 3ivx etc.). If DivX is installed, uninstall it too. 2. Install DivX 5 codec (5.1.1 is best IMHO)
I tested all common MPEG-4 codecs in premiere, and only DivX 5 works correctly with it (other codecs give black preview\thumbnails or output artifacts)

It's on offer for £44 or the std version is £35 and can handle MP4 apparantly I bought Magix under the impression that it would import the MP4 files and contacted their helpdesk who told me on numerous occasions that it would handle the MP4 files. After many weeks of emails and phonecalls I sent them an MP4 file created by the Xacti camera and they came back stating that,"it can import divx, but not the non-standard mp4 format created by the Xacti camera!!!!" MP4 is a general term and isn't as straight forward and simple as some people would have you believe. SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO I love the Magix application and have stuck with it. All I do to convert the MP4 files to a useable format is to use the MP42AVI application as described earlier in this thread. It changes all the files to useable avi files within MOST movie apps without increasing the file size or losing any quality. I hope Magix change their claim that it will import MP4 files! Hi all,
I am nurettin from turkey, and I recently joined to xacti world. but I have some questions, could you be so kind to answer them?
1- I use Mpeg42Avi Converter to convert mp4 files to avi files but I want to view my shoots from my dvd player and my tv. How (and with which program) can I turn these files to dvd files?
2- I watch some example film shoots on the net, from your community and other websites, and they are pretty good quality. What should I do to film nice in: a) indoors and b)outdoors (which settings)
3- What should I do to minimize the cameras poor indoor performance?
4- Did I do wrong to buy this cam (xacti c5), because my first intend is to shoot films, the second one is to take pictures.
THANK YOU ncerek@gmail.com

I bought the Magix Movie Edit (2005 I think) and yes I really like it too, I have been using it to edit and burn Movies I have recorded from the TV card mainly and some Xacti home movies but I still hate to have to convert the files first. So much so that I have tried using the Ulead movie software that comes with the camera again whilst the it is limited it is great to be able to use the mp4 files with thumbnails (unfortunately my system is too a low spec and the output movie was jerky but I am building a new higher spec pc... , I see that Ulead has released a new version of their full movie sw (Ulead 10), does anyone know if they have carried over the Xacti compatability to it? ps just gone to their site and downloading the trial, I'll update when I know if it works or not, J Has anybody tried Magix Movie edit pro plus?
