Does anyone else find that the noise from the zoom on a C4 is very loud and picked up the mic - or is it just my unit?

My C5 picks up zoom noise as well as autofocus noise, I use fixed focus to eliminate one and try not to zoom too much to eliminate the other, it is no worse than any other traditional camcorder I have owned, and is only obtrusive if there is no speaking or other noise being recorded on the shot. Incidently the wind noise filter seems to actually work!

It seems like Sony DSC M1 has many features over Xacti C5 and it is available in the States apprx. the same price.

I've looked at the M1 at www.dcresource.com/reviews/sony/dsc_m1-review/index.shtml and it was not rated highly. I don't think it is nearly as easily handled as the C4 either and the images shown, particularly mickey mouse look pretty fuzzy especially at the edges of the subject Damn Sony for using proprietary cards too. (why can't i write the word d.amn?) Can't plug this card straight into my or just about any laptop in the world as i can with my SD cards

The C1 I recently bought makes a very noticeable, continuous, grinding noise caused, I assume, by the autofocus. There seems to be no way of switching off autofocus. The noise from the zoom's motor is even louder. The retailers have agreed to take it back and allow a refund, acknowledging that this problem is widespread. It is louder than in Mr Lee Smith's clip on this site. I am thinking of buying a C4, instead, but notice from Mike's comments here that this, too, has a noisy autofocus system. Mike says he uses 'fixed focus' to overcome this -should be grateful for clarification what this entails as Sanyo's website doesn't say anything about manual focusing. Thanks for any advice. Tony

Maybe the user doesnt use the zoom whilst filming instead zooms in prior to recording and waits for the camera to adjust - then press the SET BUTTON upwards to lock the zoom - then presses record with no zooming sounds! Once finished recording press the SET BUTTON upwards to activate the auto focus again! Just a suggestion! Lee www.xacti.co.uk

Tony, to clarify my coment on fixed focus. (Note this is not the manual focus function) When in video shoting mode I push the little "set" button upwards once, this locks the focus to the infinity setting and disables auto focus. On the display an icon appears with the words "AF" with a little padlock icon next to it. As far as I know this makes the camera behave like a cheapo fixed focus camera but I can not tell any difference to my video clips, if any thing the absence of out of focus clips caused while the autofocus tries to keep up with the action is a plus, as well as losing the sound of the AF motor whirring. I don't know if the C1 and C4 have this option, Hopes this helps Mike

Thanks, Mike, that's what I was looking for. If anyone has a C1 and could please let me know whether Mike's work-around disables autofocus on that model too, I'd be so grateful. I'm due to return it in the next day or two if it doesn't. It would be helpful to have the same information about whether Mike's work-around works on the C4 too, in case I decide to substitute this model. Incidentally, Mike, or anyone else, is the stabiliser on the C4 and C5 digital or optical? If the latter, does it make motor noise of its own please? Thanks. Tony

On my C1 - pressing the SET BUTTON upwards results in the Auto Focus being switched off and the actual focus being locked at whereever it was last focussed on! I tried focussing on something near and then pressed the SET BUTTON upwards and attempted to focus on something further away and the image was out of focus! BUT Focussing something as far away as you can and then pressing the SET BUTTON upwards will result in no auto focus and most images between the further point you focussed on and near you should be nearly in focus all the time without need for the auto focus and noisy drive to kick in! Obviously you cant focus too closely on things but its a good trick for general to long distance shots! Lee www.xacti.co.uk

Thanks, Lee. I really appreciate having that confirmation. In view of what you say, I'll get my C1 back to keep and look forward to blissfully noiseless future recordings (I'd re-sealed it and handed it to someone to post back to the retailers for a refund, which was why I couldn't carry out this test myself). How curious, though, that this important feature of being able to switch off that noisy autofocus is not mentioned in the camera's user guide, unless I missed it. I'm doubly glad I found this website. Thanks for your help, Lee and Mike. Cheers, Tony

Good luck Tony, let us know how you get on with your testing.... Re image stabiliser, on the C5 it is digital and introduces no audible noise to the clip. Mike

Thanks, Mike. Your solution works fine for me. I bought the C1 and it is possible on this model to lock down the autofocus just as on later models of this camera.
