;D 42 minutes video on 1 Go can be more than we need if we have a laptop to clear our SD card daily. But what if we travel and do not want to bring a PC? More sd cards? yes but even if prices went down last few month, still expensive. I found a very effective and cheap issue. I bought an X-drive (Look X-drive, shipped from Vancouver in 3 days, it cost me 40 euros on ebay). It's a very small portable HDD USB2 reader, sold with no hard drive. Just put in the 2.5'' laptop harddrive you need (I had an old 6 Go one, but you can find some very easily and cheap in spare parts from laptops on ebay or in any second hand retailer).
And that's it. I can store my pictures and video every night on the HDD and use an empty SD card next day.

Thats a great idea! I currently use a 20gb Archos portable hardrive - but the idea of buying a device that allows you to plug ANY hardrive into it and use it as a portable device is amazing! Lee www.xacti.co.uk

How do you transfer the files from the SD card to the hard drive without a computer interface? Sorry if I am missing something!

The Look X-drive is not an external HDD reader. It's a PSD (portable storage device) like Vosonic Xdrive, but far cheaper. You connect your xacti or camera through an USB2, press a button and it copies your SD card on HDD. When you're home, just connect to your PC, press another button and it copies from the X-drive to your PC. Can work with batteries (for nomade storage) or USB2 for PC transfers. I was very pleased with it. I've got it in 4 days from Vancouver, good packaging, "how to " docs, all connectors, good e-bay seller... It's sold with no hard drive in it. But if you do not have an old laptop hard drive, it is very easy to find on e-bay, and very cheap. They even give you the screw driver to put it in the X-drive. try this link if you want to have a look: search.ebay.com/look-xdrive_W0QQsofocusZbsQQsbrftogZ1QQfromZR10QQsacatZ-1QQcatrefZC6QQftrtZ1QQftrvZ1QQsadisZ200QQfsopZ1QQfsooZ1

This is the first time I post in this forum. Surprised and thankful for the information and discussions here on C4.
Just learned that Lee has an Archos. I also have one, Archos AV 420 which only plays MP4 video in AVI format. I've changed some .MP4 files to .AVI by MP4Cam2AVI. Their sound and pictures did not synchronized when playing in the Archos. The AVI files were played normally by the PC.
Do you encounter similar problems or I've just screwed up the convertion with some wrong parameters? Please help.
Thanks in advance.

I only use my Archos 20gb storage device for storage and NOT playing the clips! The Archos device records and plays only mp4 video coded as AVI files and I have never felt the need to reencode them for this device! BUT I have encoded some videos to play on my Orange/Microsoft phone (C500) where I have converted them to WMV and they have played in sync! I think its just a trial and error thing, getting the bit rate at an efficient rate where the device playing it can cope with the data rate and also selecting the correct type of audio. If I remember correctly, there was a setting in Virtual Dub which would convert video files to the Archos required format - but even using those settings was a bit hit and miss! Best of luck and tell me if you have any success! Lee www.xacti.co.uk

Just upgraded the firmware to the latest update for AV420, i.e 2.0.34, and found that it solved all the problems. Suggest other users to try it out.

I got a PQI mPack P800 and a CF SD card reader whilst gadget shopping in HK. It plays the C4 videos straight from the card & can of course copy the pictures and movies to the 40GB HD. I recommend the P800 as it plays lots of other video & audio formats & can record from an AV source (760x576x30fps). A good travel companion for the C4....
